Maximal Flow through a Network

چکیده

Introduction. The problem discussed in this paper was formulated by T. Harris as follows: "Consider a rail network connecting two cities by way of a number of intermediate cities, where each link of the network has a number assigned to it representing its capacity. Assuming a steady state condition, find a maximal flow from one given city to the other." While this can be set up as a linear programming problem with as many equations as there are cities in the network, and hence can be solved by the simplex method (1), it turns out that in the cases of most practical interest, where the network is planar in a certain restricted sense, a much simpler and more efficient hand computing procedure can be described. In §1 we prove the minimal cut theorem, which establishes that an obvious upper bound for flows over an arbitrary network can always be achieved. The proof is non-constructive. However, by specializing the network (§2), we obtain as a consequence of the minimal cut theorem an effective computational scheme. Finally, we observe in §3 the duality between the capacity problem and that of finding the shortest path, via a network, between two given points.

Mathematical Model for Bi-objective Maximal Hub Covering Problem with Periodic Variations of Parameters

The problem of maximal hub covering as a challenging problem in operation research. Transportation programming seeks to find an optimal location of a set of hubs to reach maximum flow in a network. Since the main structure's parameters of the problem such as origin-destination flows, costs and travel time, change periodically in the real world applications, new issues arise in handling it. In t...

Maximization Network Throughput based on Maximal Flow for Single-Source Two-Destinations Multicast

For guaranteeing all multicast destination nodes receiving the source information with their maximal flow respectively and obtaining the network maximal throughput, a heuristic algorithm based on network coding, Maximal Flow for Single-source Two-destinations Multicast (MFSTM) is proposed to maximize the network throughput. By calculating the each destination’s maximal flow, the number of linkd...

Applications of Maximal Network Flow Problems in Transportation and Assignment Problems

This paper presents some modifications of Ford-Fulkerson’s labeling method for solving the maximal network flow problem with application in solving the transportation and assignment problems. The modifications involve the tree representation of the nodes labeled and the edges used them. It is shown that after each flow adjustment some of the labels can be retained for the next labeling process....

A Multi-Level Capacity Approach to the Hub and Spoke Network

The existing works considering the flow-based discount factor in the hub and spoke problems, assume that increasing the amount of flow passing through each edge of network continuously decreases the unit flow transportation cost. Although a higher volume of flow allows for using wider links and consequently cheaper transportation, but the unit of flow enjoys more discounts, quite like replacing...

Flow Logic

A flow network is a directed graph in which each edge has a capacity, bounding the amount of flow that can travel through it. Flow networks have attracted a lot of research in computer science. Indeed, many questions in numerous application areas can be reduced to questions about flow networks. This includes direct applications, namely a search for a maximal flow in networks, as well as less di...
